Proud Mom Moment

My 19 year old son got home tonight. He was out in Redbluff CA, fighting wildfires for two weeks
This was "home" for the time he was there. They ate military rations and bathed in a creek.

That's my boy, the one on the far right! I was so pleased to see all of the pictures he took while out West. I wasn't really worried, but it sure is good to see him and know he is back home.

Burp Clothes and a Onsie Dress

I was catching up on reading this morning at Posie Gets Cozy , she always writes so eloquently...she was talking about how nice it is to get the house picked up and then spend some unrushed time being creative. It is a rainy day here today, I got up early and followed her lead.
It was so nice to get back in my sewing room and just enjoy the morning.

My daughter's co-worker is expecting a baby. She is into Winnie the Pooh. I made her three burp cloths. These are so fun to make and look so much better that just using the cloth diaper as a burp towel. I used this tutorial.

Another friend had wanted me to make a baby dress for her. These little onsie dresses are just too cute!

I use the Once Upon A Onsie pattern by Linda Sherony, lsherony@aol.com The only change I made was by using ribbon around the waist instead of a cloth band. I really think the bow tie in the back makes it look more "girly" too.

I'm so delinquent! This mystery quilt project was started months ago. Everyone else completed theirs....I'm committing to posting a completed quilt top by this time next week. The weather and other fun things have kept me from my sewing room. I apologize for the lack of crafting going on here.

While there aren't any detailed instructions, this idea for a bedside book caddy is very cute and full of inspiration.

Oh Fransson! has posted her 2nd tutorial using vintage sheets. She's also gonna have a new pattern for sale in her etsy soon. Love her stuff!

Summer

Enjoying this nice weather too much to be very fiber productive. We went back to my mother-in-laws this weekend. The sauna is completely sided now and the holly hocks were open. I do have a few sweaters on the needles. Yard sale coming up this weekend is forcing me to refocus on getting this house a little more organized by getting "stuff" out of here. If I could just get the upstairs as set as the downstairs....Thanks for stopping by, I promise to have more fiber related posting next week.

Found this recipe . It's actually one of my favorite cookies, and yet I don't think I've ever made them before. It's on my list now.
Hope you are enjoying your Summer.

A trip to the homestead

My husband's family came to America from Finland. My DH was raised in the farmhouse his father was born in. I love the old buildings on the property. He decided to side the sauna this past weekend. Neither one of us has ever sided before. I think it's turning out pretty nice. We're going to trim the windows in a blue color.Quilting skills came in handy with cutting and measuring. We made a little template off the first piece and really did the back in quick time. This building has a little change room with a water pump and a large sauna area. It's heated with wood so it gets very hot in there.
The front is gonna be a little more tricky. We're going back this Sunday to hopefully complete our project and enjoy a good hot sauna.
This woodshed is right beside the sauna. I love the old worn color of the boards. My sister in law keeps flowers planted everywhere. I wish these hollyhocks were blooming, but they will and it's still beautiful to me just this way.
Sorry for the lack of completed projects. I did make some cute burp cloths and a great bath blanket for the shower we had for my new grandniece this past weekend. Somehow, I never got any pics of what I made...Too distracted by how cute she is and how happy I am for my sister and her family. Life is good!

Ric Rac is the Salvedge Queen! I love what she does with all that salvedge. Check out the pillows, scarf and key tags, little quilt, and, my fav, the bag. I don't know how I missed this great post from January, but these rings are too cute!

There is another great tutorial over a Oh Frasson. This one is a workbasket using vintage sheets.

A Quick Tutorial

A good friend of mine made this little addition to her pants last year. I really admired hers, and tried my own this year. Now, I want to make even more....First I measured down from the crotch to desired length (13" for short me) I'm planning about a 3" addition of fabric for total inseam.
I used a fat quarter and cut two 6 1/2 " strips the length of the fat quarter.
I then folded that in half and layed it over the end of the pant leg.Using a pencil, I marked the line for my seam. I sewed this seam, trimmed it and folded my "tube" with wrong sides together.
This double folded "tube" was then pinned to the right side of the end of my pant leg.
Just sewed it on using my walking foot edge as a guide. Folded it back down and pressed.
One final little top stitch for a finished product. Love it! I felt pretty spiffy today in my new pedal pushers.

Lisa received her kitchen swap. I didn't want to post about it till she got it, but this is the apron I made her using a vintage tablecloth. I hate cutting up vintage things, but the tablecloth had a stain on it that I was able to cut out. I did send her a few more things (like some chocolate for being late with my swap). Check out her post here.

Here's my very own clothespin apron. I just made my own newspaper pattern using the picture from the previous post as inspiration. I'm very pleased.
I bought this fabric over a year ago. It's called "Forties Retro" by Sharon Yenter, for In The Beginning fabrics. I knew I loved the print, but wasn't sure what I would make with it when I bought it. It would've made a cute curtain for the laundry room.

Check out this post for a great organizational idea.

If you have little people in your life, this sure looks like some great Summer Fun.

We're looking forward to our local 4th of July Parade today and fireworks in the lower harbor this evening. Hope you have a great 4th.
